Everything you need to know about HYLE towels.

Care & Washing

Yes — a small amount of shrinkage is completely normal and expected with natural cotton. After the first wash you may notice a shrinkage of around 3–5%, which is within the natural range for unbleached, undyed cotton that hasn't been pre-treated with chemical stabilisers.

We recommend washing in cold water (30°C or below) and air-drying flat to minimise shrinkage. Avoid tumble-drying on high heat. After the first wash, the fabric stabilises and further shrinkage is minimal.

Machine wash cold (30°C), gentle cycle. Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent — avoid fabric softeners as they coat the natural cotton fibres and reduce absorbency over time.

Air-dry flat or hang in the shade. If you use a dryer, use a low heat setting. The towel will soften naturally with each wash — no chemical softeners required.

We recommend against it. Fabric softeners deposit a waxy coating on cotton fibres that actually reduces the towel's absorbency over time. HYLE towels soften naturally with use and washing — trust the process.

Because we use zero synthetic dyes, there is nothing to fade or bleed. The natural ivory-oat tone of the cotton is the actual colour of the fibre — it is permanent. You may notice a very slight brightening after the first wash as any surface dust from the weaving process rinses away. That's it.

The Product

This is natural. Conventional towels arrive pre-softened with chemicals. HYLE towels don't. The slight initial stiffness is simply raw cotton fibre in its natural state. After the first wash and a few uses, the fibres relax and the towel becomes noticeably softer. Most customers find they're at peak softness by the third or fourth wash.

Yes, though absorbency improves after the first wash. We recommend giving it a cold rinse before first use. Natural cotton becomes progressively more absorbent over time as the fibres open up — the opposite of what happens with chemically-treated towels that degrade with washing.

Three main things: no dyes (the colour is natural cotton), handloomed (woven by hand without electricity on traditional looms), and no chemical treatment (no softeners, bleaches, or optical brighteners). What you receive is as close to raw fabric as a finished product can be.

This means it improves with age rather than degrading — and when it eventually reaches the end of its life, it biodegrades completely.

We source from farms that use traditional, chemical-free growing practices — the same methods used for generations, without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. We are actively working towards formal GOTS certification and will update this page when that process is complete.
